Back to Cycling After 84 Shots!

The marriage vows say “for better or for worse.” I pondered these words as I was on the examination table at Caring Medical. For one thing, I was in the process of getting 84 injections to my sacroiliac joints and lower back, administered by my husband. Yup, you heard me correctly – that was 84 injections! “Why?” you ask.

Well, it all started back in June 2004. You see, my husband, Ross Hauser, renowned Prolotherapy physician, decided that he wanted to be an Ironman. An Ironman competition is quite grueling and requires many hours of training and sacrifice – sacrifice on the part of the Ironman, as well as on the part of the spouse or the significant other. What do you mean by that? Well, not only does the spouse receive significantly less contributions to the running of the household, but it brings the spouse’s training to a whole other level.

I thought that running a marathon was a pretty big accomplishment. I have done three of them – one each year for the last three years. However, Ironman is a whole other ball of wax. Needless to say, I have learned to do many other things that I never thought I would be doing, but that’s quite another story. You do what you have to do if you want to see your spouse!

My back pain started on the day of the Ironman. How could the Ironman race cause ME to get back pain? I was not even in the race! We arrived in Coeur D’Alene, Idaho two days before the race. During these two days we ran the course, biked the course, drove the course, and then prepared for the race. On race day, we woke up at 3AM. We arrived at the lake by 5:30AM. We packed back packs, first aid kits, water, Gatorade, gear, more gear, and even more gear. My very large backpack was stuffed to the gills with all of the aforementioned items. Our friend made spread sheets for Ross and Peter’s progress monitoring. He plotted estimated times out of the water, estimated times on the bike, estimated transition times. We had a team of five people to get the job done.

We carried walkie talkies and cell phones, as well as two cameras each. We mapped out a course, synchronized our watches, and broke out in a run the second the gun went off. We attempted to get pictures of every part of the event, every transition, and of course, yell our support as many times as we could. Well, to make a very long story short, our guys completed the Ironman event in 13 and 14 hours respectively. They were hoping to complete it in one hour less than they did – but the temperature was hot and the first-timers encountered a few mishaps along the way.

There is no known cure for arthritis. Prolotherapy and nutritional supplements can help alleviate, reverse, or end arthritic pain by treating an underlying cause that contributes to degenerative disease, ligament laxity. Strengthening ligaments and other connective tissue can help prevent bone on bone arthritis from developing.
